How We Fire: From Kiln to Finish

January 20, 20251 min read

Loading the Kiln\n\nThe kiln is loaded slowly, intentionally. Each piece is placed with consideration — where the flame will hit, how the atmosphere will flow, what the neighboring piece might contribute.\n\n## The Fire Speaks\n\nAt cone 6 (1240°C), reduction begins. Oxygen is restricted, and the flame pulls oxygen from the clay and glazes themselves. This is where iron-rich clays bloom into deep greys and charcoal tones.\n\n## The Opening\n\nAfter 14 hours of firing and 24 hours of cooling, the kiln door opens. Every firing is different. Every piece carries the mark of that specific fire.\n
